3D Tapestry

3D Tapestry

One of the main characteristics of weaving, namely that you construct the fabric as you are creating the image, allows you to build in different directions or to work in 3 dimensions. Working with a warp and a weft or two sets of interconnecting threads gives you many more possiilities than a flat woven tapestry might suggest. This class will explore different ways to create three dimensional pieces and will consist of:

  • a look at 3D work of several tapestry artists,
  • existing techniques,
  • the two techniques I developed for the tapestries Hidden and Beneath
  • a session on finding ways to create 3D effects or layers depending on the participants' designs.
